God's desire is to give us growth. Growth is that Christ increases in us so that our way of being is like His. We were created to be full, so that His growth can be seen and so that Christ can be expressed and displayed. And how do we achieve this growth? By having more experiences with Christ. It's not just about receiving His word, but about experiencing it in our daily lives. Experience is what gives us growth. If we only hear that 'prayer is the master key,' but do not experience it, there will be no growth. The growth of life is internal fruit: that Christ grows in me; and external fruit: that others come to Christ through me. If there is internal fruit, because we remain in Him, there will always be external fruit.
