Lamentations is the continuation of the Book of Jeremiah. In this book, the prophet Jeremiah narrates the condition in which the people of Judah were left after the conquest of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. As we learned in previous books, the work of the Cross is to demolish us. Everything God wants to do is to bring down our 'self', our fallen nature, because nothing of ours is useful. If there were anything good in our Adam, Christ would not have died on the Cross. The Lord's task is, then, to bring down what is ours so that all that is His may appear, since, from the moment we are brought down, He is lifted up.
